Staying in the Light

Jesus was very specific about following His teachings. Not only did He show us how to find the light, but He also gave us specific instructions for staying in the light once we are in it.

His exact words were, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." - John 8:12

For example, Jesus taught us to turn the other cheek. It wasn't because He wanted us to allow people to continue hurting us. He taught us to turn the other cheek because obeying His teaching keeps us from falling back into darkness with the other person.

"But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also." - Matthew 5:39

It is not our job to argue with anyone. Turning the other cheek means the problem is now in God's hands. He will deal with the person giving you problems. God expects His children to live and walk by example.

When I learned the true meaning of this teaching and began implementing it. I saw God show up for me in ways that are beyond astounding. He doesn't tolerate cruelty from anyone. When someone tries to start something with me, I shake my head and think they are making a huge mistake. Because I know God saw what happened, and I know He doesn't forget or let anything slide.

Jesus also says, "Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you." - Matthew 5:44

It took me a little while to understand that teaching. But after seeing how God handles things with other people, I completely understand why we should pray for our enemies. I've seen things handled in such a way that brought literal fear to my body. Witnessing God handle a situation made me realize I'd better never mess up when it comes to another person. Seeing this teaching come to life instilled a whole new level of fear of the Lord.
